Whenever possible the Installation files will be copied to a location of the Hard drive, this ensures that if OS files are requested they are always handy, also if performing an installation using these files it will be much quicker. Examples
C:\INSTALLATION\WIN98 FRESH INSTALLATION OR UPGRADE? Only excuse I can see for an upgrade is when the customer does NOT have original disks for his/her software, therefore you have no opportunity to reinstall their software, on occasion I will attempt to reinstall or upgrade an operating system in order to "STRAIGHTEN OUT" a corrupt Operating System, however, a FRESH INSTALL will always ensure a much faster / cleaner system. NT Class operating systems including: NT4, Windows 2000, Windows XP & Windows 2003 allow you to boot up directly to the CD and perform the installation (Assuming your BIOS supports this function) With Most 9X Operating Systems, you will need a BOOT DISK which includes CD ROM device drivers in order to gain access to the Installation media, from here you can either run SETUP or copy the installation files to a location on your Hard drive REFER TO MY ARTICLES ON OPERATING SYSTEM INSTALLATIONS FOR FURTHER DETAILS |

Upon completing the installation of your operating system one of your first concerns is the installation and testing of device drivers, while working on a brand name PC this can be accomplished quite easily by taking note of the make and model of the PC and going to the manufacturers website where they will usually offer download to easily update drivers for all of the devices originally included with the PC. While working with a clone PC or a PC that includes third party devices the installation of drivers can be a little more difficult, ideally the customer would always have the original media including drivers for all of their devices, invariably this is never the case, for the resourceful technician this should not be a deterrent to completing your mission, in this section I will include Links and advice for the hunt & installation of device drivers. AUTOMATED DRIVER DETECTION Try having your devices identified automatically by using DRIVER MAGIC, Once your devices are identified you will be given the option to click on links that will allow you to download the proper drivers for your devices, the ONLY catch with this system is that you have to be connected to the Internet, therefore you better have a working modem or NIC (With the correct drivers preinstalled) in order to benefit from this service, I always carry a spare NIC and Modem (WITH RESPECTIVE DRIVERS) so if necessary I can pop them in the customers PC and get online. Make sure you fill in the FREE TRIAL form so you can obtain login & password good for 30 days
FCC SEARCH ENGINE Most electronic equipment will have an FCC number printed on it or affixed to it, if your device has such number use it to determine whom manufactured the device, once you know whom manufactured your device you can use a search engine to find the Home page of the manufacturer Common Search pages I use include: WWW.MSN.COM
MANUAL DRIVER SEARCH If you know the make and model of your device you can resort to a community database of drivers to try to find the correct driver that will work with your device. Although they DO require for you to go thru the FREE subscription routine at the end everybody gets the same login and password, therefore I see no harm in giving it out here Login:
drivers MAKE SURE before downloading drivers to check the feedback submitted from other users that have already downloaded the same driver as they can provide valuable input regarding the viability of the driver you are about to use. |

Once the Operating System is installed and the Devices are functional it is "CRITICAL" to immediately perform all Microsoft recommended system updates, Microsoft provides a way to do this directly by accessing their WINDOWS UPDATE webpage http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com The first time you access this web page you will be asked for permission to install some code on to your machine that allows the WINDOWS UPDATE page to analyze your computer and determine which updates are necessary, please be advices some updates MUST be installed individually therefore it will likely take you several hours and many reboots before you've got them all, Resist the urge to not do them, in order to ensure your computer is as safe as possible you want to install ALL critical updates, and since you are at it mines well get the non critical ones as well, in the long run you will be much better off. |

RULE #1 "YOUR COMPUTERS FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE IS YOU !!!!" DO NOT expect your computer to save your ass, An informed user can provide a sturdy wall of protection for his PC for everything else all we can do is keep updated Antivirus and Antispyware programs and cross our fingers. E-MAIL NEVER open attachments unless you requested them and know exactly what they are and why they are being sent to you, E-mail attachments could easily be the most popular way viruses get into your machines, Viruses are programs once you open them they will do whatever they are designed to do, all the fancy firewalls and Internet restrictions will do you no good if you execute that infected program. WEB SITES Avoid at all cost questionable websites, whenever prompted to install Java o ActiveX components while browsing a webpage try to close the prompt by clicking on the X on the upper right hand corner of the prompt box, whenever possible do NOT click on the YES or NO option, if you end up on one of those websites that flood you with POPUP boxes use the combination ALT-F4 repeatedly to close them before they have the opportunity to open other windows Use a POPUP blocker to avoid being flooded with advertisements, most of them include the option to ALLOW certain pages to POP OPEN when they are desired. Most modern browsers including Firefox and internet explorer include POP UP blockers, many toolbars such as googles have built in POPUP filters as well
According to http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/s/spyware.html
After installing the device drivers on a new PC the FIRST THING I do is install the following programs to prevent spyware infestations Just follow the white rabbit to
their respective WebPages: ALL of them include online code updates, make sure you download the latest updates for all of them and immunize your PC against everything suggested.
VIRUS
My next step in defending the system I am setting up is installing a reputable Antivirus program, I usually use Norton antivirus however there are a number of free antivirus applications out there as well. |

First and foremost the most important thing to do is stop unneeded programs from starting automatically every time you boot up computer, many people use MSCONFIG.EXE which is included with several versions of Windows, the application does not exist in however in every version of Windows plus it does not have the ability of pinpointing ALL the locations where starting applications are hidden, I prefer using a FREE application called: Download it from: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml Ensure you DO NOT stop applications you DO want to start up automatically such as antivirus software & Palm pilot Synchronization software, otherwise you will render these applications useless. Other than stopping unwanted applications there are plenty websites out there dedicated to System Optimization. do a google search |
